White Tiger – Sketch for the Painting

Inital rough sketch for Rebecca Latham's new White Tiger painting (currently in progress in it's color phase).

This is my iniatal sketch I used for the white tiger painting I’m working on at the moment.   It is a rendering of one of the White Tigers we studied in Cincinatti during the NFL’s filming of them for television commercials.  The painting is now in it’s color phase of painting.Rebecca Latham Wildlife Artist

    Hi Rebecca,

I am an aspiring wildlife painter and would someday like to paint as a career. Right now I am in the learning phases of painting and can’t figure out the specifics of oil and acrylic painting. Do you think you could explain some techniques you use when starting a painting? Thanks so much!

I recently started to draw realistic animals, and you have been a real inspiration for my work. I am only so-so at it though, but I know that good practice dramatically improves you talent, so I’m going to keep working and someday I may be as good as you!!

Wow, Rebecca. I am amazed at your drawing skills. I love your wolves and owls. I would have to say that I love the drawings of animals that live in the woods the most. How long have you been drawing? Any tips?

  46. Rebecca says:

    Well….tips… Um. Practice. A lot. ;)

The only thing I did was make a lot of art – drawings, sculptures, paintings, etc. If you’re drawing or painting things you really love, it’s fun anyway. :) I’ve been painting/drawing since I was 12 (not counting those crayon works from preschool ;) ).

    Good luck :D

Yes – I have done quite a few fairy drawings and paintings. I was doing them exclusively for a time. This is a scan of a fairy painting I made with acrylics and colored pencils on a navy blue paper when I was about 17.

  71. abbi says:

  72. Person says:

I love your drawings! By the way do you have any tips for me on how to make animals look 3-D? I started skectking a couple years ago. I really want to become an artist when I grow up.

  73. Rebecca says:

Sam, Kristi, Annaslisa, Abbi, Person – Thank you. :D

I really can’t tell you how happy I am that you enjoy my work or find it inspiring. …and I really am delighted that so many of you are looking forward to being artists in the future. :D

Well everybody, I have to be honest…practice is a lot of it.

This is a note I sent to someone asking for some tips on drawing recently in an email…

Draw from life if you can. If you do draw from photos it’s best to use photos that you’ve taken yourself or ones that someone has given you permission to use. Pay close attention to the shape of the object that you’re drawing – observe what angles are there. Everything that you will draw has unique qualities to it that will make it look just the way you see it, so watch for them.

I don’t know if you are just interested in rough sketches or a finished off drawing…. If you will be trying to make it look dimensional, then watch for the shading. Pay attention to where the shadows are cast and how they wrap around the objects. If there are other objects around your subject, like a table that an egg would be sitting on, or rocks that a bird is standing on, those objects can reflect light onto the subject also – being sure to put that into your drawing will give it extra dimension. If it helps, try drawing from a black and white photo to compare your work to the values of the photo/printout.

    Best,

    Rebecca

  76. Rachael says:

    Hi Rebecca !!

You are an AMAZING artist; I love everything you do ! And this tiger sketch inspires me a lot :]

I do have one question. As an aspiring artist myself, I've been working on a sketch of a tigers head and everything's going great, but the eyes keep making it look animated, and thats not what I want… :[ any suggestions ??

    Thank you so much !

    Rachael Ciaramella :]]

  77. sirius geek says:

i love your work you put so many details in to everything. i love art but it seems like the only thing i di any more im getting really good but… i dont know you say to practice a nd i do i love to. i would love to see more of your work!!! your faerie was beautyful. well e-mail me with more of your art work please. oh and you said in one of your earlyer e-mails that you used to do more of the fantasy drawing i would love to see them, im kind of at that stage right now
    thanks; sirius geek!

  78. Rebecca says:

Rachael – Thanks! :D Well, when I have had something look more cartoonish/animated usually means that I wasn’t paying close enough attention to my reference. It’s odd, but just subtle changes to an angle of an eye, etc. will dramatically improve the look. Be critical. Hope that helps…

Siris – Thanks! :D Well, I haven’t made any fairy pieces recently… I have so many people asking for wildlife paintings that I just haven’t had the time to do them. …but if I do, I will be sure to post them here on my blog so you can see them… :D

Good luck with your artwork! (both of you! :D)

  79. Kendra says:
