This is a 9x12 rabbit painting. The tones in this piece are unusually dark {a long story that I won't burden you with :) }. In it's next phase, I will be adding the lighter tones to freshen it up.

This painting was started in the car on the road as we recently had to attend the Northeast Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony which meant a good deal of time away from the studio. I was able to start & sketch several paintings that day.

(Added October 24, 2004) I was so fortunate to gather these references early one morning in New Mexico. The color of the earth and sky was reflected everywhere and the strong lighting accentuated the mood even more. The area was truly breathtaking. This is my first coyote painting. I often listen to them at night as they howl a chorus in the front yard during the fall and winter months in Minnesota. Though I have seen many of these animals in the wild, for some reason I've never been able to capture one on film or in my sketchbook before they escaped me. Thankfully, my family members are a bit faster with the camera than I :).
(Updated May 11th, 2004) This elephant resides at the Tulsa Zoo. We have enjoyed studying their beautiful animals at the facility for several years now.
(Updated May 11th, 2004) This painting has been completed as a 20 x 30. It has been sold. Prints will be released soon.
This is my preliminary sketch for a painting of two trumpeter swans. I am eager to paint this painting as it has been quite a while since I've painted a trumpeter swan piece. I will be painting it a bit larger (about 20x30). The swans will be strongly lit from the right with delicate shadows and water tones in violets and corals.
The swan references were gathered at the Smithsonian national zoo this past fall after our show in Easton, MD.
(added October 06, 2003) Monarch butterfly on common milkweed. The painting is about 9"x12".
Recently, my agent made several good suggestions about my work. One of them was that I should consider painting more florals and butterfly paintings.

This piece depicts Great Mormon Butterflies. They are common in Malaysia & Indonesia. I have been fortunate to be able to observe behavior of this species. The painting is 6x8.
(updated May 24, 2003)
I photographed this Great Egret during our trip to Fl. for the Florida Wildlife Exposition. After the show we drove to Sanibel Island. The Ding Darling Nat'l Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place to go birding if you're in the area. The Great Egret in the painting was one of dozens fishing as the tide was coming into one of the many inlets in the refuge. There were many lichens and mosses on the rocks and branches in the water that I look forward to painting.
