A Spring Garden’s Inspiration

This is one of a collection of flower paintings that were just completed.  This piece was inspired from a visit to the Minnesota Arboretum while their iris gardens were in full bloom last spring.  They were just beautiful (not to mention their poppies! …but that will have to be another painting… ;) ).  I had never seen so many varieties in one place – it was fantastic!

This painting is 5×7, “Garden Pearl” – watercolor on board.

  1. Gorgeous beyond belief – I am inspired!

  2. This flower is absolutely STUNNING! I love how subtle the yellow is in the centre of the flower. I noticed that you did this on board… is it a specially prepared board just for watercolor? Thanks for sharing this with us, Rebecca.

    • Joanne – I use an archival illustration board, smooth surface. It's suitable for watermedia, acrylics, pastel and graphite/charcoal/colored pencils.

Thank you everyone! Glad you like it!!

This is JUST like an iris that I saw in Butchart Gardens in Victoria, Canada!!!!! What a simple eloquence! :) (too bad that these aren't in California, and if they are…they certainly aren't as pretty as this one!)
