New Work in a Busy Studio..

Great Horned Owl watercolor miniature painting in progress, sepia stage.

Very busy around the studio lately.  Shipments to galleries, Holiday exhibitions.. commissions and new paintings for new venues requesting work…  Keeps me on my toes!

Thanks so much to everyone for your support of my work..it is SO appreciated!

This is one of the paintings that I’ve just started on shown here in it’s sepia stage.  It’s a watercolor and should finish up as a 5×7.

This is one of the beautiful education birds that we had the chance to visit with in Seattle.  He was gorgeous!  …and so attentive. :D

Seaside Art Gallery & New Miniature Paintings

Attentive - Cougar

Content - Young WolfOn the way back from our trip to Wyoming, Montana, and Washington, after so much time traveling and away from my studio, I was getting an intense urge to paint something…  Anything.  (It’s a common phenomena when you’re addicted to art as badly as I am….)  So, on the road, I pulled out my paints and brushes and began working on a collection of pieces.

These are two of those paintings with plenty of finishing touches added in the studio.  The miniatures are both 5×7 watercolors.  They will debut at the Seaside Art Gallery in the Outer Banks of North Carolina just in time for the Holiday Season.  ….and I am very pleased to post that the gallery will now be representing our work, with this being the first installment.  (In years past, my family and I have been a part of their International Miniatures Show as well.)  If you are in the area, be sure to stop in! :D

Pacific Northwest Travels

Swamped a bit lately recovering from the trip and finishing up some deadlines..but finally a chance to make a post here… :D

For the final leg of our Western adventure, we quickly toured Washington State.  …going to several wildlife facilities and visiting friends.  Lots of beautiful things to paint and inspiration. :)  ( more pics here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=111793&id=503663762&l=f19d3224eb )

Near the Canadian border, we stopped in to see our friends who are missionaries to the First Nations, Jack and Carolyn…very sweet..spoiled us terribly..  Carolyn has been a family friend for as long as I can remember. :)  (She’s also an artist. :) )  We had a wonderful tour of Whideby Island!

We took a trip with our friend Dee Dee (Wildlife/animal artist – www.deedeemurry.com / Blog –UPDATE, link now functioning… ) and spent a day seeing animals to paint. :)

It was a bit on the soggy side, but the Quinault Rainforest was beautiful. :D  A stroll on the wooded trail makes you feel very small very quickly surrounded by such enormous trees.  I was disturbed a bit to see large areas clear-cut for logging nearby on private/reservation lands.  Farther up the peninsula, the cliffs (and haystack rocks) along the Pacific coast are gorgeous in that area as well. ..the sky cleared from the light rain we’d had to a foggy haze with the sun..seemed magical.

After crossing the sound, we toured through the North Cascades National Park and a stopped for a hike.  The vegetation was so interesting..I had never seen so many mushrooms. :)  It was sunny but snowing over the pass, so we had a quick (and crisp) look around there as well.

Finally, we made a stop at a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center to tour their facility and see their beautiful animals, coming away with a lot of beautiful references for new pieces.

It was a bit of a whirlwind tour, and wish I could have had time to see more, but so much fun! :)  Now..back to the studio to catch up..

Western Shows – Almost Ready..

Paintings for exhibition - Rebecca Latham

Finishing new works, framing, packing, shipping, etc… A bit of a rush around here, but it should be down to a dull roar soon.  My family and I are preparing for our exhibits out West this month and just putting the finishing touches on new paintings for the shows.  (I finished my last painting for the events about 1/2 hr ago.. :D )

This is a snapshot of the first collection of smaller paintings that were framed – 16″x20″ and smaller.  I hope some of you can make it to the shows at Galleries West in Jackson Hole, WY and Moosehorn Gallery’s exhibit for my family and I in Livingston (Paradise Valley), MT.  …would love to see you there!! :D

(If you aren’t able to make it in person, I plan to be posting some snapshots too. :) )

Daydream Raccoon Paint By Number

Paint by NumberI just received a shipment of these kits that are coming out in early 2010.  Paint Works is using my painting “Daydream” as a design for a new paint-by-number.

You can see their listing of the painting here.Daydream - watercolor on board

American Art in Miniature

American Art in Miniature 2009 - Rebecca Latham

American Art in Miniature 2009 - Rebecca Latham

This is a new traditional miniature that will debut at the Thomas Gilcrease Museum’s invitational “American Art in Miniature” this Fall in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  If you have a chance to attend the opening, it is a beautiful event. :D  I have had the opportunity to attend several times.  A wonderful evening…mingling with patrons and fellow artists in the exhibit..and so many beautiful pieces to enjoy.

The show features works on paper, sculptures, and paintings no larger than 9×12 (or 12″ in any direction for sculpture).

This painting is 9×12 and, and like my other paintings, watercolor on board.  Seeing this wolf was a bit haunting, but inspiring as well.  I really loved painting the intensity of the eyes. :D

International Guild of Realism Fifth Annual Juried Exhibition

Watercolor portrait of a young Native American girl in full costume.

Just a quick post-

I just received notice that my painting “Wacipi Maiden” has been chosen for the International Guild of Realism’s Fifth Annual Juried Exhibition at the J. Willott Gallery in Palm Desert, California.

Quite honored to be among the 53 works chosen from more than 300 works submitted by members.  The exhibit opens in Early 2010.  :D

Sneak Peek – Grizzlies in Miniature

Grizzly Bear - watercolor in miniature work-in-progress

This is one of the paintings in my studio that has been keeping me occupied lately…one of many, actually.  The full painting is 30×40 inches (Watercolor on board, in miniature) of 2 grizzly bears in a disagreement ;).    The photo posted here is slightly skewed and a detail section shot of the larger piece..I will get a nicer shot posted of the final painting when it is ready.

I’ve been burning the midnight oil to complete it and several others for the exhibition opening for my family at Moosehorn Galleries in Paradise Valley, Montana.  I have a fairly large body of work prepared and am really looking forward to getting out of the studio and into nature for a while. :D

(I do have a rather tight schedule however…  So in spite of getting away for a bit of adventure, I will certainly be dragging my easel and paints along for the ride.  …possibly transform vehicle to studio en route…we shall see… :D )
