Commission Progress – Red Fox Kit Miniature Watercolors

This is the progress of the three fox kit miniature paintings in my studio right now. I have a lot of the detail on the foxes themselves painted in already, though I'm not completely finished with them yet. For the commission, I am fortunate to have no set deadline, so I am able to set these pieces in my studio and study them and determine how to proceed to completion. (Though, I am eager to see them proceed as are a number of my blog visitors.) I am not quite sure how I would like to complete the logs in two of the paintings - what lichens or mosses to add, etc. I have done some research for the paintings recently during a short research trip with my family (to be posted soon) and may also bring some of the local forest habitat into my studio for reference to paint from life.

Red Fox Kit Miniature Watercolors – Painting Progress

These are a few scans of some of the recent progress on the fox kits that I'm painting (one of them is a commissioned work - the inspiration for the collection). In my studio right now, they are farther into the color stages than what is shown here - I should have some more complete scans of them to post soon. :D

Latham Studios Spring Show – Saint Croix Valley Carpenter Nature Center

This past weekend my family and I held our annual spring wildlife art show at the Saint Croix Carpenter Nature Center. Our art shows are held in the spring and fall at the nature center's Trailside Lodge or Visitor Center (this show was in the Visitor's Center). This year the University of Minnesota' Raptor Center held their spring raptor release at the nature center also - releasing a rehabilitated American bald eagle, a broadwing hawk, and two red-tail hawks back to the wild on Saturday.

Sketch for Lupine Miniature

This is the sketch of a blooming lupine that I made for a new miniature painting. I started this piece to work on during our show this past weekend at the Carpenter Nature Center. The flowers are from one of my trips to the Grand Teton National Park to study the wildlife and plants (and Tetons :D ). There were so many different wildflowers blooming during that trip, the landscape didn't seem real - it was so beautiful! :D

Sketches – Red Fox Kit Miniature Commission

I've been commissioned to paint a small fox kit painting - a portrait. These are three sketches I made in preparation for the painting, though I might just paint all of the poses. The painting is for a very nice lady that just loves red foxes. :D

I had the wonderful opportunity to actually hold this little guy – so painting him is always special to me.  It was so much fun to be able to get that close to him – he was just adorable! :D (Actually, he started to get a little sleepy and doze a little because he was so comfortable. :D )

I’ve been really lucky to be able to get up close to animals and wildlife and study them like I have.  (Even bottle feeding a litter of hungry wolf puppies once….that was really a unique experience! :D )  It has made a world of difference in the inspiration that I draw from in my work.  (A huge thanks to all of you that have helped me have these opportunities!!!)

I don’t post myself on the blog too often, but I just enjoyed my time with this little fox so much, I couldn’t resist (sorry).  (Umm… my mouth is open because I’m talking. :? )

Large Bull Elk Watercolor Painting

This is a larger painting that I was working on a little earlier this week. It's a 20" x 30" watercolor of a bull elk, titled "Passage". This piece developed pretty rapidly. I painted a study for this larger painting as a miniature 4" x 6". The miniature study can be seen in this post.

I just received notice that the three paintings that I sent to the "16th International Miniature Art Show" at the Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, North Carolina were juried into the exhibition. The Outer Banks gallery was founded in 1961 (the barrier islands of North Carolina). A reception for the show will be held at the gallery on May 26th from 7-9pm.

The gallery posts the entire show online (and will remain online for a full year) – the only miniature show of this type that does this, that I am aware of. (artwork featured in the show is still being added – the online exhibit will be complete by May 4th) The show usually exhibits over 600 works of art by artists from around the world. The miniature show will run May 4, 2007 – June 02, 2007. Visit the the event online by following this link. :D My Mom, Karen, and sister, Bonnie, also have paintings in the exhibition.

This painting is one of my new miniature pieces I made for the show that pre-sold before the exhibition opened – "A Little Unsteady – Whitetail Fawn". (My recent paintings "Ruby Throated Hummingbird" and "Marsh Evening – Snowy Egret" also found new homes during the pre-sale.) Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist
