Preparations

tree_fog

Just an update from the studio…  A bit hectic lately.  Surrounded by stacks of paintings nearly completed throughout the studio and paint flying..  I am in the process of preparing a body of work for a show at Moosehorn Gallery ( www.moosehorngallery.com) in Livingston (Paradise Valley), Montana.  They are featuring my family for an exhibit at the end of September.

A number of these pieces are for several other shows coming up this Fall as well.  …including the Fall Arts Festival event at Galleries West in Jackson Hole.   A bit of pressure keeping me on my toes, but I’m delighted with the requests for work..

No new artwork ready to post at the moment, but more to come..  I hope to have snapshots from the events out West this Fall to share as well.  Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

American Bald Eagle Watercolor – Work-in-progress

American Bald Eagle - 8x10 Watercolor on Board, traditional miniature

This is a snapshot of my most recent work in progress.  The painting is a portrait of an American Bald Eagle, 8×10 (traditional miniature).  She is an education bird that has been at several locations here in the Twin Cities, her name is Tempest. :)

Whitetail Fawn

Whitetail Fawn

This is another work in progress… It is about 5×7, watercolor, featuring a little whitetail fawn.  This little one just made me smile. :D (both when I visited her and while painting her portrait) I hope to capture her softness and personality in the finished piece.

I have another painting of a young fawn resting in the grass that hasn’t quite made it’s way to a post on my blog as well…which, depending on the color schemes of the two works when complete, may be a companion piece.

New Wolf Portrait in Miniature

Wolf Portrait

This is a new painting that was started a day or so ago, shown here in it’s sepia stage.  It is watercolor and about 8″x10″.  When I had the chance to study this wolf, I was particularly drawn to his beautiful light eyes (with a faint hint of aqua) in the morning sun.  When he looked at you it was almost eerie…I knew immediately he would have to be painted. :)

Painting in the fur textures on this piece has been so much fun! :D ..and progressed rather quickly for this size of a piece. (….though I may have been slightly excessive in my enthusiasm while painting it in…or so my painting muscles are telling me… :/ )

Kestrel Painting (New work in progress)

In attempts to post paintings I’ve recently neglected to list on my blog :) ….  This is another small work in progress of a Kestrel that is on my easel at the moment.  I love the color contrast of pale blue and rusts of these stunning birds – beautiful palette to work in. :) This has been a fun little painting so far.

‘Wistful – Timberwolf’ (Progress…)

Wistful - Timberwolf watercolor in progress. (Miniature, 9x12)

I thought I might load up a progress post of ‘Wistful’ for everyone who would like to take a peek. :D He’s coming along fairly well.

Two New Works – ‘Trail Mix, Red Squirrel’ and ‘Wistful, Timberwolf’ (In Progress)

.

Trail Mix - Red Squirrel. A new small miniature painting in watercolor (5x7)..Wistful - Timberwolf. A new small miniature painting in watercolor (apprx 8x10).

These are two new paintings I am working on at the moment “Trail Mix – Red Squirrel” (5×7) and “Wistful – Timberwolf” (Approximately 8×10).  Both are pictured here in the sepia stage.

I have a large body of new work that will be distributed later this summer and fall at various  galleries and exhibitions.   …so more to come shortly. :D

Latest on the Easel – 9×12 Wolf Miniature

A new 9x12 watercolor of a timberwolf in sepia stage. Work in progress.

This is a new painting of a wolf in progress at the moment.  (9×12, miniature done in watercolor.)  I liked the expression in his face. :)

Putting In the Details – Timberwolf Watercolor

16"x20" miniature painting of a timberwolf in watercolor by Rebecca Latham.

This is a new piece that I just started on a day or so ago, still in the sepia stage of painting in the essence of texture and shapes.   It’s a watercolor painting (done in miniature of course :D)  features a timberwolf and will be 16″ x 20″.

I have been wanting to start a painting of a fur bearing subject in a slightly larger format for a little bit now.  …just something about painting large areas of fur and all ot the textures and depth involved…very fun!  (I have another wolf piece that is a bit smaller, a 9×12, that I just began working on yesterday for an upcoming deadline as well.  …posting that soon as well.)

Young Native American Girl Portrait in Miniature

In-progress watercolor portrait of a young Native American girl in full costume.

I was in the mood for some color a few days ago, after painting so many earth tones in my wildlife paintings, so I started on this little piece, which is now nearly complete.  This is a smaller miniature, only around 4×6 in, of a young Native American girl in full costume.  I loved the glow of light, fine seed beading in her jacket and jewelry, and the satiny feel of her blouse.  …and such vivid color! :)

I used to do a number of portraits here or there when I worked in looser watercolors some time ago.  ….and growing up, that was for a time, exclusively what my mother, Karen, did as an artist.  More recently I have been drawn to painting them after my mother and I were commissioned by the Butler Institute of American Art to paint portraits for their US Presidents miniatures permanent collection.  I’ve found that I love the textures and color that I can work with in a human portrait in watercolor.  ….and so far, the smaller size I’ve chosen to format them fits well also (just a little break from solid fur or feathers :) ).
