Little Painting of a Chipmunk – Sepia

This is a little chipmunk painting in the sepia stage shown probably larger than life.  The actual work is approx 3″x5″ (watercolor on board).  I love these little visitors to the backyard birdfeeders. ..some of my favorite subjects to paint.

Owl Quick Draw

This is a piece that was done as a ‘quick draw’ and auctioned at a gallery in Hudson Wisconsin.  The artists in the event paint a work from start to finish in a set amount of time – 1/2hr to several hours.  This piece is a watercolor on board like my other paintings and finished out as a 9×12.

Barred Owl

This is a small piece of a Barred Owl that was just completed for an exhibition that will open a little later this year.  I had originally made the painting 5×7 in, but decided later to give a little extra space around the bird and finish it as a 6×8 instead.  Much more pleased with the look of it that way.

Finishing touches on a Raccoon

I thought I should post an update on a raccoon piece I have in progress (sepia stage of this is shown here).  It is almost done at this point.. just a few accents and fussing to polish it up a bit before it’s shipped off to the gallery.  I am pleased with how well the fur came together on this one.  Sometimes it’s a struggle when it doesn’t seem to want to cooperate.

I have a hand finished frame that was made especially for this painting – eager to see it all together in it’s final display.  Will post photos of that shortly.  It will finish as an 8×10 and, like my other work, is watercolor on board.  I haven’t chosen a title for the piece yet.

Wolf Puppies in progress..

…a quick post showing the detail of a work in progress – a pair of wolf puppies enjoying a shady spot.. 11in x 14in, watercolor on board, ©Rebecca Latham  The painting is fairly far along already… I hope to have it completed soon.

I’ve been a little less prolific in my work (or active online) than I’d like to be recently because of a number of rather serious family emergencies.  Thankfully things seem to be returning to normal now.  Thanks to those that sent notes of concern..

Grizzly Bear (Sepia) 24×36

Being in the mood for painting a lot of fur, this is the beginnings of a 24in x 36in grizzly bear with the sepia watercolor under painting nearly in place.  The rich glazes of browns in the painting are going to be very nice to put in I think.  …quite a bit of work involved for this piece, being that I still put in the detail of my other miniature works in spite of this size, but I believe the effects will be worth all of the effort.

Sunday Sketches

Sunday Sketches…

This is a scan from my 8.5×11 sketchbook.  The page was a field sketch from an one of our outings in a natural preserve in Minnesota.  It was a bit boggy on this trip.  …was pleased to find some carnivorous plants.

Fawn Portrait

This is a recently painted little fawn portrait.  When working on the piece, I focused on rendering detail in the fur, yet retaining a softness throughout the piece.  I also wanted to portray her cautious look at the viewer as she carefully stepped through the grass.  Fawn Portrait, 7″x5″, watercolor on board, ©Rebecca Latham

11×14 Bison (Sepia)

This is a detail view of a new painting, 11in x 14in in sepia stage, of a Bull Bison that I was able to see in the Yellowstone area.  I’ve surrounded him with sage, grasses, and the burned out log in the foreground to compliment his dark coat.  Loving all of the textures involved in this piece.  watercolor on board, ©Rebecca Latham
